Description of treatment
Sagging eyelids correction consists in correcting sagging and drooping eyelids, and ultimately in the optical magnification of the eye. The treatment may involve the upper or lower eyelid (removal of excess skin, stretched part of orbicularis oculi and the removal of fatty tissue around the eyelids). The effect of the operation is maintained from a few to several years.
There are three possible options for performing the procedure:
- The correction of the upper eyelids;
- The correction of the lower eyelids;
- The correction of the upper and lower eyelids.
The operation consists in cutting the lid (upper eyelid is incised in the furrow on the upper eyelid, which is the place where the bend is, and the lower eyelid at about 1-2 mm below the lash line), and then the removal of excess skin, the stretched part of the muscle, and excess body fat. The procedure is performed under intravenous anesthesia on an outpatient basis (a few hours' stay), or under local anesthesia, without the need to stay in hospital after surgery.
Facts
Blepharoplasty (eyelid plastic surgery) is carried out in people even in their thirties.
However, surgery of this kind at such a young age is rare and results from genetic or medical reasons. Both women and men decide to have such procedures performed typically around 50 years of age.
Blepharoplasty is also carried out for medical reasons.
Drooping eyelids may be the result of hypothyreosis or kidney disease then eyelids are often swollen and as a result they droop stretch faster. Drooping eyelids correction is recommended for medical reasons, when the degree of upper eyelids drooping is causing excessive strain on the eyesight (frequent blinking, rapid eye fatigue).
Myths
Blepharoplasty removes crow's feet.
Correction of the shape of the eyelids only improves the appearance of the eyelids, it does not remove wrinkles (although it may reduce some), discoloration under the eyes, or does not improve the shape of the eyebrows.
Preparation for the surgery
Each surgery is a burden for the human body. That is why our specialists always conduct interviews to qualify patients for surgery. General conditions for the surgery to be conducted include:
- good health (we do not perform procedures in patients with infections, particularly upper respiratory infections; anesthetic consultation is sometimes also recommended);
- procedures are not carried out during menstrual discharge, due to the reduced blood coagulability;;
- it is necessary to test bleeding time and blood coagulation time, and perform complete blood count;
- it is advisable that the patient was vaccinated against hepatitis B virus (infectious hepatitis), but it is not a necessary condition to perform the procedure.
Possible complications
In our clinic we put the greatest emphasis on providing patients with maximum safety. Each patient receives comprehensive information about the procedure, including about the possible complications (the doctor discusses them in detail during the consultation prior to the procedure).
Postoperative care
After the surgery, bandage dressings are applied for 2 days; sutures are removed after 4 days of the surgery. During this period, it is advisable to limit physical activity (avoid sudden movements and exercise). It is also necessary to apply compresses on the eyelids ( boric acid, green tea or chamomile).
Postoperative recomendations
Swelling and bruises around the eyes that can occur after surgery, usually disappear after a few days from the surgery. You may experience a reactive conjunctivitis (usually after a few days the symptoms disappear). After removal of dressings, for about two weeks it is advisable to apply compresses on the eyelids. Cold compresses can be applied for the first two days after surgery, then compresses should have room temperature. The final result of the surgery is usually achieved about one month after its execution.
