Description of treatment

Skin cancers are mainly: skin cancer, melanoma, metastatic cancers and tumors of the skin appendages (sebaceous glands, hair follicles, sweat glands).

We treat all lesions that require surgical intervention. During the procedure, we find out (through histopathological diagnosis) whether the change is a cancer. If it is, we select the treatment in accordance with the highest standards of treatment of skin cancer.

Treatments to remove skin cancers usually do not require special preoperative preparation. In each case we discuss details of the procedure with the patient during medical consultation. If the changes are not large, it is also possible to carry out the surgical intervention during the consultation. Surgical removal techniques and methods of treating cancer are selected individually depending on the type of tumor, and the place of occurrence as well as the patient.

In case of changes diagnosed as cancerous lesions requiring further oncological treatment we direct patients to the Great Poland Cancer Centre. Patients with dermatological changes that do not require surgical treatment, are directed to experienced dermatologists.

In situations where adjuvant treatment is necessary, our patients are directed to the Clinical Hospital of the Transfiguration in Poznań, where consultations and treatments are carried out by Artur Gromadziński, M.D..

Facts

Melanoma is the most dangerous of cancers.

Yes, but only within skin cancers. Melanoma is a much rarer cancer than others, such as basal cell carcinoma, but gives most of metastasis through the blood and through lymphatic vessels. Other skin cancers rarely metastasize and are 99% curable.

Myths

Skin lesions should not be removed because it accelerates their development.

Surgical removal of the lesion allows for the accurate diagnosis and rapid implementation of treatment if it is needed.

When one nevus is removed new appear immediately in the same or a different location.

A man can only have a tendency (also hereditary) to the formation of nevi. If one nevus is removed, it does not cause the formation of other, because the skin is not equipped with "a nevi memory."

Laser birthmark removal is safe.

Laser during the procedure destroys the nevus and that does not allow, as in the case of surgical excision, for histopathological examination. And only histopathologic diagnosis enables to specify whether the removed area was cancerous.

Melanoma is a cancer that can be cured rarely.

The early stage of development of melanoma has a very high percentage of curability - up to 90%. That is why the correct diagnosis and rapid treatment are very important.

Postoperative care

Depending on the tumor which was removed, after the surgery the patient can go home or (in rare cases) stays the night at the clinic. Depending on the size of the removed nevus, the postoperative care may also include dressing changes in our clinic. Removed tumor is examined by a pathologist who determines the exact type and proper limits of its removal. This means that in some cases there is need for complementary procedure which is a guarantee of the effectiveness of the treatment.

Postoperative recomendations

Postoperative recommendations depend on the type of surgery and are always considered individually for each patient.
